How does the website rank checker work?

The ranks come from the Majestic Million. Majestic crawls the web and counts, for each website, how many different IP subnets (roughly, different networks) have pages linking to it. The million websites linked from the most subnets are ranked from 1 to 1,000,000.

Our server downloads the latest list every week and keeps it, so looking up a website doesn't contact Majestic.

Only the domain name counts: https://www.example.com/page is looked up as example.com. A subdomain has its own rank only if Majestic lists it separately. The previous rank is the website's rank in Majestic's list from the day before the one we have.

The rank measures links from other websites, not visitors, so a popular site that few other sites link to can rank lower than you might expect.
