How does the online ping tool work?

Most computers are capable of pinging another computer.

To run a ping from a Linux shell or Windows command prompt, you can do something like this:

ping 216.73.216.187

On our server, PHP runs the same command, ping -c 5, for the address you enter. To keep the tool from being misused, it only pings public addresses, and each visitor can run a few pings a minute.
